The Unforgetten Heroes

Had went to our Branch’s NE Tour today. We had chosen the Military Defence tour, where we will be visiting some of the historic sites where some of the battles were fought in Singapore during World War II.

What I enjoyed most about the tour was when we visited the last stop. Reflections at Bukit Chandu, a historic site where Singapore’s fiercest battle was fought against the Japanese by the 1st Malay Regiment. The was where the last battle against the Japanese were fought before the fall of Singapore. The fierce resistance by the Malay Regiment had hampered the advance of the Japanese but due to the lack of ammunition, the Malay Regiment were eventually over-run by the attacking Japanese.

Am personally very touched by the actions of the 1st Malay Regiment, where their undying spirit of defending Singapore to their last is really impressive. Personally had felt that more should be done to bring the stories of the 1st Malay Regiment out to the younger generations. As if not for this tour, I would not have known so much about this group of heroes. As when asked by the tour guide who are the local war heroes we knew. Lim Bo Seng seems to be the first person that comes to my mind. Now I can proudly say the group from the 1st Malay Regiment and 2LT Adnad Saidi are another local war heroes I must remember.

An educating tour and it is one that I would recommend every Singaporeans to at least go and learn more about our histories.
